Purdue Week

I kind of actually feel back kicking Purdue while they are down.  Not that they have ever been really good, but there have been some great games throughout the years headlined by the Halloween night game of '98 and the Starks fumble return of '04.

 

I guess looking at their 2010 schedule thus far, the Boilermakers are pretty much par for the course with a 4-4 record.  Although not according to Sherwin.  He is the latest in 'student previews' to discuss the Purdue season through a game by game opponent breakdown.  

 

Here are some of his highlights:  

"Last year, Notre Dame came to Purdue and was able to get out of a tough one...luckily.  This time around though, the Claussen-less Notre Dame I think, will not be up for the challenge that the Purdue Boilermakes will have."

"Purdue hosts Western Illinois...Western Illinois, I'm assuming is not too good.  I don't know much about Western Illinois, I don't know if you do, but I doubt it."  

And for his Wisconsin preview, he predicts the Badgers will win because Clay is a beast.  At least he knows a little something.  

Please watch the entire video...he went through great lengths in researching the Purdue opponents, even calling the IU game the greatest game of the year.  Maybe it's because they will actually win.  Needless to say, Sherwin predicts a 9-3 season for the Boilermakers.

 

  

Michigan State Week

Phew...Bucky enters Big Ten play at 4-0.  We all expected this to happen, but it hasn't been pretty.  

Focus is now turned to the Big Ten season and the Michigan State Spartans.  All of us at Badgerfans.com certainly wish Coach Dantonio a full and speedy recovery after his heart attack.  He is a great coach and only makes the Big Ten better being at Michigan State.  

With that being said, on the to column.  This "preview" is designed to make fun the opposing team's program, students, roster, ect and help you get fired up for each game.  If you are looking for schemes, formations and play calling, there is plenty of that elsewhere. 

Here is a video titled "MSU Football History and Tradition"

The featured History and Tradition are as follows:

1. The "Go White Go Green" Chant

2. Zeke "The Frisbee Catching" Wonderdog featured at halftime

3.  Johnny Spirit - a super fan who is painted from head to toe and attends every home and away game, while riding his bike...even bowl games.

I'm sorry, no adult male should be acting like this...period.  Rumor has it he also sits in the student section for football and basketball games.  Dude, move out of your parents basement, get a full time job and acquire some responsibility.

What seems to be missing are Big Ten Championships and Rose Bowl victories.  Talk about tradition...Students often dress in trojan helmets and players pictures have been edited into scenes from 300.  How long has this been going on...since 2006??  But the team does have a "Walk" as they arrive at the stadium.  Congrats, so does every other college football team.  

This is going to be a great win to open the Big Ten season.  1-0

Arizona State Week

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa...WTF??.  I thought this kid was a San Jose State fan.  Now he is breaking down ASU??  I will officially request he do a Wisconsin Preview before the Big Ten season starts.  I'll just have to send him a Badger shirt and hat.   

 

CSTV put this piece together on the Arizona State student section and how "crazy" it is.  I want to punch the guy in the face who is interviewed at the 50 second mark...really hard.  The only crazy thing here is how big of a tool this kid is.  If this isn't motivation to take ASU to the cleaners, I don't know what is.

Brad Denny from the examiner.com put this preview together for the 2010 ASU Football team while linking each position to a Beatle's song.  It's brilliant.  He named their O-Line after 'Help!'.  JJ Watt and company could have another big day.

San Jose State Week

With Bucky back in Madison and fresh off an opening day win, Coach Bielema gave the team Monday off.  Focus is now turned to San Jose St.  Things don't get easier for the Spartans who come off an opening 48-3 loss to Alabama as they prepare for travel to Madison.         

Besides reminding Packer fans that James Jones played at SJSU, there isn't much to preview here.  Actually, I take that back.  The Orlando Sentinel ranks San Jose St. number 114 out of 120 Division 1 football teams (Forget FBS, I call it D1).  Things go from bad to worse quickly as their biggest strength is sophomore TE Ryan Otten who had two TD's in their spring game.  That can't be a good sign...no 2009 stats, just what he did during their spring game.  Remember, that is their strength!  Their weakness you ask? Oh, just being ranked 119 out of 120 football teams in rushing defense, giving up 266 yards/game in 2009.  Not only have they already played Alabama, but SJSU plays Utah next week.  At least that game is at Spartan Stadium.  Their non-conference schedule certainly doesn't do them any favors in the points differential department.

Here is The Bleacher Report's preview of SJSU.  Students and alumni will have a hard time getting excited about this season...3 wins are predicted.

This must be a student at SJSU giving his preview for the 2010 season.  Do you have a crying baby in the house?  If so, put this video on and I guarantee it will be sleeping within minutes.  There are a few gems here.  As he is discussing the WR's he says, "Guys to expect are Jalal Beauchman, he had that one big run near the end of the season."  This was followed by his discussion of the secondary, "They did pretty well for three sophomores and a freshman who played last year.  Now they're three juniors and a sophomore."  Brilliant!!  Too bad ESPN's Dream Job was cancelled after 3 seasons after successfully launching nobody because this kid could have had a future.  Well, I have to at least have to give credit where credit is due, he is passionate about SJSU football.      

 

Bucky faces it's first non-conference cupcake of the season (UNLV was more like a piece of cheesecake).  This game should be over at halftime in a 52-10 type score.  1-0.

UNLV Week

Week one has arrived...how glorious does that sound?  This UNLV "preview" is a bit different than the others you might read throughout the web. My goal is to poke fun at each Badger opponent and remind ourselves how great it is to be a Badger fan.

This video is from 2009 but a couple of UNLV football players seem to think their program is on the rise. Finishing 5-7 in both '08 & '09, the video should have been called "UNLV Football - Par for the Course." You decide whether this video is real...the trajectory of the football looks a bit suspect.

 

This is another video of former UNLV coach Mike Sanford absolutely melting down after a 2006 loss to Iowa St and refusing to leave the field. It's quite amusing how the camera man gets a quick interview and then follows his every step...even as he wipes out while running back on the field. This tantrum is the closest thing to the Mike Gundy feak out of 2007.

We all remember the night the lights went out in 2002 as myself and I'm sure many of you were in attendance at Sam Boyd Stadium.  Peter Manzo of Barstool Sports was there too and wrote an entertaining recap of the events from that night. I guess we'll never really know what happened, but how the hell does that city lose power? Vegas could fart and produce enough electricity to run those lights for an entire game. To make matters worse, I was only refunded my $200 bet which was huge for a college student. Those winnings would have went a long way at Monday's, Wando's and the Red Shed upon my return to Madison.

Before camp opened for the rebels, The Las Vegas Review-Journal presented UNLV's Top 5 Questions for the 2010 football season. They are:

1.  How will the quarterback battle play out?

2.  How will the running back battle play out?

3.  The Rebels' defense made several changes in the spring, but will it be improved this season?

4.  Because of a lack of depth, how badly would injuries affect the Rebels?

5.  How quickly will UNLV make the transition from the spread to a two-back offense?

With these uncertainties, UW better win by 28. These question cannot be further from what UW experienced entering camp. The Vegas Review-Journal could have saved a lot of trees by simply asking, "Give us one reason why UNLV Football won't suck in 2010."

This week can't go fast enough and to make matters worse, I have to wait until 10:00pm for the season to officially kick off. Let's get this train out of the station.  1-0
